The submarine was launched on 13 September 1941 and commissioned on 15 November, with ''Kapitänleutnant'' Georg von Wilamowitz-Möllendorff in command; he remained in charge until the boat was lost, receiving promotion to ''Korvettenkapitän'' in the process. ==Operational career== ''U-459'' conducted six patrols, but as a supply boat, she avoided combat.
